One of the last runs of an F40PH on the San Joaquin was on June 9, 2001 when Amtrak 381, wearing Surfliner colors, marched past the target signals at Claus, just west of Modesto. The air horn seen just above the roofline of No. 381 actually belongs to the cab car trailing just behind the unit. Ironically, just when Amtrak found a paint scheme that looked good on the pug-nosed engines, they were retired. |
