During 2003 Amtrak implemented push-pull service on the San Joaquins. While Capitol Corridor service used push-pull operations upon delivery of the California Car equipment, the San Joaquins didn't. Starting in 2002 the practice was used only sporadically due to employee concerns about crew safety during grade crossing accidents (which are frequent on the line). By the end of 2003, however, push-pull operation was the norm and not the exception. In this photo Train 716 glides past an almond orchard just west of Ballico on March 2, 2004. |
