Tidewater Southern 143/743

Author's Note: Below is an email from Alex Huff regarding the disposition of this unit as of Year 2000.

Subject: Current status, Tidewater Southern #743

This unit was sold in 1987 by Charles City Western to Sisseton Southern Railway (as their) #76, leased in 1989 to Dakota Southern Railway (companies share common ownership) and is presently active and based in Mitchell, SD.  It is used to switch a carton printing plant there.  It still has the roof (and rear) mounted number boards from the TS.

In the below photo the 76 is coupled to former Southern Pacific SD9E 4427, which is currently leased to a grain elevator in Mitchell; the 70-tonner is based less than a mile away at the carton manufacturer which we switch.  We (recently) had to run the 70 tonner over to the elevator after a battery terminal burned off (the 4427) when we tried to start the SD.  We used the 70 tonner to jump start the larger unit!
